“The U.S Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 575,000 to 1.6 million homeless and runaway youth are living on the streets from New York City to Los Angeles. Of these, between 20 and 40 percent are LGBT according to the 2007 seminal study,” stated the human rights article posted by alternet.org.
There is a shelter located in Chelsea New York called Sylvia’s Place that provides shelter for youths to get off the streets for a night. The accommodations are dirty and crowded, but it takes teens off the streets and keeps them protected for a night.
LGBT homeless youth is something that people are blinded to. They are exposed to high HIV rates as well as street murders, which go unreported.
