LOS ANGELES — HBO is developing a biopic on anti-gay former orange juice spokesperson Anita Bryant, according to Reuters.
Bryant was a former Miss Oklahoma beauty pageant winner and popular pop musician in the late-50s, early-60s. After marrying, she became a Christian singer and projector of wholesome values who believed gays recruited children in order to increase their fold, according to the Reuters report.
One of the most famous media memories of Bryant, as popularized by the recent biographic film Milk, is of Bryant getting pied in the face during a national television news feed. The event has since found its way into popular culture.
“She is a fascinating person on every single level,” the biopic’s screenplay writer Chad Hodge said. “The twists and turns of her life are incredible.”
