Why is the T-Rex Eating the Jew?

It’s baaaaaaack! Glee returns to grace the small screen in its third season premiere. I was so excited to watch the new episode, I was giggling and clapping like an over-caffeinated little girl. Most of the gleeks are seniors now, and it’s time to start a new season of fabulous….

What I Loved.

  • Okay, I gotta put it out there: Glee gave Kent State a shout-out!! When Rachel and Kurt confide in Emma about applying to the Juilliard School in NYC, Emma reveals that Juilliard does not have the program they’re looking for. Instead, she suggests Kent State University–“It’s close,” she says, passing them a KSU pamphlet. Love it!

  • Efficient tie-ins to last season. Glee does a swift job of catching up the viewer on what happened at the competition in NYC. Kurt reminds the New Directions that the video of “The Kiss That Missed,” between Finn and Rachel, has a ton of hits on YouTube and scathing, witty comments such as, “Why is the t-rex eating the Jew?”
  • Sue, how I missed you. Toning down last season’s over-the-top terror tactics, Sue has channeled her ambitious greed into running for Congressional office. She slowly gains popularity in the polls after Schue “glitter-bombs” her a la Michelle Bachmann. Sue sets Santana and Becky on the job of burning the Glee’s purple pianos (won’t even bother getting into that plot point) and gets back to scheming behind the cover of her Cheerios.

What I Didn’t Love.

  • Missing characters, moving characters, changing characters. Sam (Chord Overstreet) is gone, as the actor left the show. The large-lipped blond’s absence is explained briefly and heartlessly, and that’s that–he’s gone! Big, brash and beautiful Lauren Zizes drops out of the New Directions and kisses her relationship with Puck goodbye. She claims last season’s loss in New York City has hurt her “cool,” and she’s moving on. As for the “radical” change of miss Quinn, Glee has crossed the line into the land of cliche. Though I do appreciate her tramp stamp of Ryan Seacrest, I know her pink hair/black clothes/smoking cigs behind the bleachers act will die soon enough. But I’ll miss Sam’s lovable obliviousness and Lauren’s confident strong hold on hottie Puck.
  • Oh, Schuester. I hoped that a new season would mean a new chance for you to shed your creepiness. How wrong I was. The curly-haired Schue wakes up in bed with Emma–they’re obviously living together now–and attempts to give his sweetie a kiss. Emma, of course, refuses (“I haven’t brushed my teeth yet!”). This relationship continues to bug me in all its awkwardness.

Blaine comes to WMHS to be with Kurt--and be a New Direction. Photo: fox.com
  • Blaine at WMHS…So, Blaine is mega hott and his telling Kurt he switched schools gave me chills (too damn cute), but I’m not a fan of his move. I was really digging the Warblers’ a capella renditions, the different setting of the other school and seeing Blaine in a cute uniform. On a scale of one to 10, I’m at a 5 on excitement for the move. It’ll bump up to a 7 if Blaine ditches the daily bowtie attire.
  • Cheesy old song selection. In an attempt to recruit new members, the New Directions prances around the cafeteria singing “We’ve Got The Beat.” Lame, overdone and not exactly the best song to use for recruitment purposes. As for the rest of the songs, Glee stuck with broadway show tunes. The only one I found entertaining was the show-ending rendition of “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from Hairspray.

Top Character Quotes.

  • “We’re gonna make beautiful cocoa babies.” – Mercedes’ football-player boyfriend
  • “She’s the one that got away…really, really slowly.” – Puck about Lauren Zizes
  • “You’re like a Jolly Rancher that fell in an ashtray.” – Brittany to Quinn
  • Brittany: “I have pepperoni in my bra.” Santana: “Those are your nipples.”
  • “Your hate is a lot like high-octane Sue fluid.” – Sue

Next Week. As far as I can tell, there’s something about unicorns and Idina Menzel (Rachel’s mom, adoptive mother of Quinn’s baby) is back. Sounds like a good time to me.
