Florida legislation proposes a ban of state aid from any production that features LGBT characters.
While the state would offer tax incentives to attract television and film producers, reports the Miami New Times, the film industry is not paying much attention to it.
“It could serve as a major deterrent to Florida,” said entertainment lawyer Peter Dekom to the LA Times. “There are a lot of actors and high-profile producers who have a powerful belief in gay rights and equal treatment under the law.”
According to Miami New Times, the Senate and House are both expected to strip this proposal from the bill. Representative Stephen Precourt, who proposed the bill, stands strong in his idea, though.
“Think of it like Mayberry,” Precourt said to the Miami New Times, referencing the setting for 1960s sitcom The Andy Griffith Show. “That’s when I grew up — the ‘60s. That’s what life was like. I want Florida to be known for making those kinds of movies: Disney movies for kids and all that stuff.”
