California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed two gay rights bills Sunday. One honors Harvey Milk, and the other recognizes same-sex marriages legally performed in other states. The bills were proposed by State Sen. Mark Leno of San Francisco.
Last year Schwarzenegger vetoed a measure declaring May 22 a state day recognizing Milk, but Schwarzenegger suggested the day be honored locally in San Francisco. However, he also named Milk to the California Hall of Fame.
Schwarzenegger told The Sacramento Bee that SB 54 bill does not legally recognize marriage but will “provide the same legal protections that would otherwise be available to couples that enter into civil unions or domestic partnerships out-of-state. In short, this measure honors the will of the people in enacting Proposition 8 while providing important protections to those unions legally entered into in other states.”
