Obama to sign hate crimes bill Wednesday

President Barack Obama will sign the Matthew Shepard & James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law Wednesday.

White House sources have affirmed that President Obama plans to sign the Matthew Shepard & James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law Wednesday.

This momentous act, attached to the 2010 Department of Defense Authorization Bill, would provide for the expansion of the current federal hate-crimes law to protect those targeted due to sexual orientation and gender identity.

After approving the singular hate crimes bill in July, the House approved the modified version on Oct. 8, and the Senate followed suit Thursday.

A reception will be held after the signing to celebrate the event.
