The Jamaican reggae musician Buju Banton’s performance in Los Angeles was originally canceled because of his anti-gay lyrics. However, the Cabana Club in Hollywood then reportedly rebooked his performance for Thursday. The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center said the group would hold a silent protest in front of the club against his performance.
His other U.S. tour dates canceled include Chicago, Las Vegas, Dallas, Houston and Minneapolis because of his homophobic lyrics.
Banton met with an LGBT group earlier in the week to discuss his violent, anti-gay lyrics. A member of the group told Advocate.com the meeting was “civil and productive.” Banton has had LGBT negativity toward him for some time now. He was acquitted from charges of assaulting a group of gay men in Kingston, Jamaica in 2006. Also in 2007, he signed the Reggae Compassionate Act, which had artists vow to refrain from using anti-gay lyrics or statements, but he later denied signing the act.
