A Positive Reaction

Designer Mondo Guerra told cameras that he has been HIV positive for ten years and has kept it a secret. He used this confession to enhance his design and make a big statement.

Mondo Guerra won his third challenge last week, Sept. 30, but he also won the hearts of viewers. With his creative and unique combination of his textiles and fabric choices, the Golden Boy of Project Runway stole the show.

What makes Mondo the Golden Boy? Well, he’s the first designer ever to win three challenges consecutively. However, this challenge meant more to him than just immunity from elimination.

Mondo Guerra told cameras that he has been HIV positive for ten years and has kept it a secret. He used this confession to enhance his design and make a big statement.

The designers this week had to create an individual fabric design that was influenced by an event in their past or their families. While pining away on their designs, the designers’ families paid them a visit.

Mondo had not even told his mother about being HIV positive.

Mondo’s fabric was created with rows upon rows of plus signs cascading down a high waisted pant. The plus signs represented being HIV positive.

On the day of the runway show, Mondo evaded the judges’ probing about the actual story behind the garment. Eventually, Mondo broke down and came out on the runway with all of us watching in our living rooms.

The judges praised the design saying that it looked clean and polished. I thought it was just fun among a runway of blah. Mondo is like the kid clothes designer for adults. Everything he has made is the epitome of youth.

“That’s what I like about your clothes,” said Heidi Klum, “They make a statement. I will remember this.”

Mondo Guerra took a major risk and got a great response from viewers and judges. Dare I say, a positive response.
