ALAMEDA, Calif – A San Francisco Bay area school district voted Tuesday to replace an anti-gay bullying portion of its curriculum with a broader anti bullying lesson. The 45-minute anti-gay bullying lesson taught every year to all grade levels in the district, Lesson 9, became a national centerpiece in the Proposition 8 debate of whether schools are indoctrinating kids to accept homosexuality.
The Alameda school district adopted Lesson 9 back in May to stop bullying targeted against students who had gay parents in districts. Opponents however argued that elementary students are too young to learn about gay people.
“Freedom of religion is protected from harassment and discrimination from anyone. It may be of no consequence to some, but it is a very integral part of many traditional families and should be honored,” said Kellie Wood, a mother of three children in the district and is part of a group circulating petitions around the community to recall many of the school board members.
