The Major League Baseball family gained its first openly gay team co-owner with Laura Ricketts buying the Chicago Cub’s franchise for $845 million.
Ricketts and her three brothers will be in control of the Chicago Cubs as its board of directors. All four will work with former owner Tribune Co., which will keep a 5 percent stake in the baseball team.
The Associated Press reported the franchise includes ownership of the team, Wrigley field and 25 percent of Comcast Sportsnet, which broadcasts a majority of the games.
Ricketts is CEO of Eco Travel LLC and on the board of the gay rights organization Lambda Legal, according to the Windy City Times.
She did not come out as a lesbian to her family until her 30’s.
“I think for a long time I wasn’t really out to myself growing up in Omaha, Neb., to a Catholic conservative family,” Ricketts told MarketToMarketLLC.com. “It took me a while to come out to myself and not long after that I came out to them. I think that it really couldn’t of been a better experience. They were all immediately supportive. … I have been really, really fortunate in that regard.”
