Cleveland’s city council passed an unanimous vote for an anti-discrimination law Monday to protect transgender people in the city.

Councilman Joe Santiago, the first openly gay council member, introduced the ordinance last year and wants the city’s members to take more action from this decision.
“I hope the new council coming on board will help this legislation evolve,” Santiago told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
LGBT activists have lobbied for more than a year to include gender identity and expression in the city laws. Council members also said they will look to expand transgender protections next year.
