College students elect "gender-queer" homecoming queen

Students at the College of WIlliam and Mary voted a transgendered student as their homecoming queen.

Jessee Vasold took the halftime field of the College of William and Mary’s homecoming game versus James Madison University Saturday as the event’s transgendered ceremonial monarch.

According to the Flat Hat, the Virginia school’s newspaper, Vasold, who will represent the class of 2011, “prefers to be referred to with gender-neutral pronouns.”

In an email to the Associated Press, W&M Spokesman Brian Whitson asserted that the college, the second-oldest in the nation, “is a diverse and inclusive community, and student selections to this year’s Homecoming Court reflect that.”
