California’s Sonoma County is under fire for disregarding the final wishes of two senior gays, according to Towleroad and the National Center for Lesbian Rights.
Clay and Harold, no last names given, shared a life together for 20 years, putting together an extensive list of safeguards for when the two would eventually be separated by death. According to the report, the couple created “wills, powers of attorney, and medical directives, all naming each other.”
Following Harold’s hospitalization, the county refused to acknowledge the couple’s documents and sent both to separate nursing homes, Clay against his will. The county then auctioned the couple’s home and possessions, the article continues.
Harold would die three months after the two were separated.
Representatives for Clay are now fighting the county, the auction house and the nursing home Clay was held captive in, NCLR reports.
