Equality Ohio is a statewide advocacy group for gay and transgender people. Doerfer has been the executive director of the Cleveland LGBT Center the past five years. She also brings local and national legislative success, nonprofit experience and understanding of the gay community.

“Sue brings commitment, community awareness, bridge building, and political savvy to her life’s work as an activist,” Jeff Smith, president of Equality Ohio’s Education Fund, said in a press release. “Her statewide presence and track record of success will allow her to hit the ground running.”

Doerfer is only the group’s second executive director. Equality Ohio started in 2005 and is based out of Columbus.

One of the group’s top agenda measures is the legislative efforts in passing the housing and employment discrimination bill in Ohio.
