Jen Ivers, a senior at Yale University, doesn’t identify as male but wants to win the title of Mr. Yale this year anyway.
Ivers, who doesn’t identify as any gender but is attracted to women, said her motive is not to be any sort of activist, but to have fun.
“Being funny isn’t a masculine characteristic,” Ivers said. “There’s a lot of hilarious and talented girls that could impress an audience without wearing a bikini.”
Students in Ivers’ residential college overwhelmingly voted to make her their representative.
Mr. Yale is a male version of a beauty pageant held every year. Unlike female beauty pageants, which focus on physical beauty, Mr. Yale is a talent show. Currently, there is no female counterpart to Mr. Yale.
“It’s not really a male beauty pageant,” Ivers said. “It’s a male ridiculousness pageant.”
