GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman supports piecemeal gay rights, according to an interview with MercuryNews last week.

Whitman, former CEO of eBay, said she supports gay adoptions, but not marriage, and welfare for illegal immigrant children, but not in-state tuition benefits.

Whitman views marriage as between a man and a woman, although she is open to civil unions and domestic partnerships. She said gay adoptions would be tolerated because “many kids need a great home,” according to the MercuryNews interview.

A self-described moderate-conservative, Whitman is running against Steve Poizner, insurance commissioner, for her party’s nomination.
