Warning: Todays review briefly mentions incest and rape.
It’s time for another HBO show, folks! So you know sex and violence everywhere! Okay not everywhere but you get the idea.
The idea to do my pseudo-review and ramble for Game of Thrones started because I flew through the first season in a matter of hours. It is a beautifully crafted tv show, think Lord of the Rings in scale and cinematography. All of the characters are well acted and serve their purpose within the episodes.
Game of Thrones takes place in the land of Westeros. Magic does exist within the world but in season one but it is barely mentioned. There is the mentioning of dragons and creatures called “The White Walkers” but overall the show is about the noble families of the land. The Starks and the Lannisters are the two main families that season 1 is focused on.
Robert Baratheon, King of Westeros, asks his old friend Eddard, Lord Stark, to serve as Hand of the King, or highest official. Secretly warned that the previous Hand was assassinated, Eddard accepts in order to investigate further. Meanwhile the Queen’s family, the Lannisters, may be hatching a plot to take power. Across the sea, the last members of the previous and deposed ruling family, the Targaryens, are also scheming to regain the throne.
That is the basic plot in a nutshell,If I had tried to explain all of season one I would have probably gone cross-eyed. The story also involves Daenerys Targaryen a woman who is sold by her brother to a ‘savage’ group of people led by Khal Drogo ( I am really sorry for all the fantasy names, just bare with it).
Weird fact: Daenerys and Drogo’s relationship becomes one of the most romantic things in the show. That’s saying something since the marriage begins with her being bought by him and then Daenerys being basically raped on the wedding night. Once Daenerys becomes more confident and actually takes control during one of their sexy times, love and tenderness begins to blossom between the two of them. Drogo even plans to retake the crown for his wife after a failed attempt on her life.
Now onto the incestuous coupling of the Lannisters (YAY). Cersei and Jaime Lannister are twin sister and brother. Cersei is the Queen of all of Westeros and is grooming her asshole of a son,Joffrey, into being the next king. Joffrey and Cersei’s two other children are ones that she has had with her brother Jamie. With in the show a possible reason for the twins being together is that their family, the Lannisters, has always interbred to keep the blood lines strong. Even though it is extremely gross and creepy, they are shown caring about each other as any other couple in love would (it’s just far more icky).
Game of Thrones is a gripping story about war, political intrigue, family and sex. The cast is huge and still growing (as season 2 has just introduced about five new characters). If you’re into medieval fantasy I highly suggest it, just be prepared for everything that is going to be thrown at you.
Season 1 of Game of Thrones is now out on DVD and on itunes. Season 2 has just started on HBO at 9pm on Sundays.
