Secretary of Defense Robert Gates set new conditions for expelling gay servicemembers from the military Thursday, according to the Advocate.
The new rules, which take effect immediately, “raise the rank of a person who can initiate” an expulsion under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to an admiral or general, while limiting third-party tip-offs to other military personnel, not civilians or anonymous tipsters, the article reports.
Gates also suggested implementing California’s Ninth Circuit Court’s ruling that a servicemember’s sexual orientation must be proven to affect group performance.
