A New York Senator loses his seat after voters choose to not re-elect him for his decisions.
Gay rights activists campaigned for Hiram Monserrate’s opponent, Jose R. Peralta, in a Senate bid after Monserrate failed to vote through a gay marriage bill. The activists say he had promised to do so, reports On Top Magazine.
After the December defeat of this bill, activists formed Fight Back New York, a political action committee to oust anti-gay Senators.
“You should be proud of this win,” the group said in a statement. “Your targeted anger and your ceaseless demand for equality paid off. This is our first clear message to the remaining anti-equality Senators that there are consequences to voting against equality.”
Monserrrate had originally lost his chamber seat, which he failed to regain in the Queens election Tuesday, due to the conviction for assaulting his girlfriend.
