A class project turned reality has become a point of controversy in Stephenville, Texas.
John Jordan Otte chose to present a play called Corpus Christi for his class college class. The play, depicting a gay Christ-like character, shows Christ performing a marriage between his two gay disciples.
“It’s just sticking a thumb in the eye of the standards of this community,” Carroll Cawyer of Stephenville told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “That’s what a lot of people are upset about.”
Growing from his classroom setting, this play will be directed by Otte and performed Saturday, along with three other student-directed performances.
To prevent any type of disruptions, the university police will provide security during Otte’s play.
“If someone wants to protest, that is part of their First Amendment rights,” said Liza Benedict, a Tarleton State University spokesperson. “just as it is the student’s First Amendment right to put on the play.”
