Illinois State Senator Heather Steans announced the introduction of the first ever gay marriage bill for the state in a press conference Thursday. The Equal Marriage Act (SB2468) is the first of its kind to be introduced to the state.
Steans spoke of her support for the LGBT community and claims the bill is the first step to equality in Illinois.
“This is a first step to advance the basic freedom in our world,” Steans said. “The right that we should all have to be able to define our own families.”
Openly gay Illinois State Representative Gregg Harris also joined Steans in supporting the bill’s introduction.
“It’s what people expect in this state. They expect their leaders to be standing up for equal justice for all citizens,” Harris said “Whether you’re in the house, whether you’re in the senate, whether you’re running state wide, this is a main stream position, it’s a moderate position and it’s the right position.”
