Gay rights activists are taking big steps in preparing for a 2010 rematch against Proposition Eight, the public referendum that banned gay marriage after it was legal for five months.
The Los Angeles based group, “Love Honor Cherish,” submitted a proposed constitutional amendment Thursday that would legalize gay marriage once again.
“Marriage is between only two persons and shall not be restricted on the basis of race, color, creed, ancestry, national origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, or religion,” the proposed amendment says in part.
The group estimates it needs more than 1 million signatures by April for the proposition to be included in the November 2010 ballot box.
The new campaign is expected to cost gay rights groups tens of millions of dollars to win. Anti-gay marriage and pro-gay marriage groups, both using grass-root organizers, are confident of winning.
