18-year old Derrick Martin, Senior at Bleckley County High School, speaks to media about the reactions to his fight for rights in his small town, according to Advocate.com
After months of fighting the school officials to bring his boyfriend to the prom next month, officials now support Martin, and have vowed not to cancel the April 17th prom. Because of this, Martin as also received support from the National LGBT community with offers to pay for his prom attendance.
Because of this controversial topic, Martin told television station 13 WMAZ that his parents kicked him out of the house because of all the attention that this has caused.
Martin feels it is his right and decision to bring his boyfriend to the prom.
“It’s the same thing as African-Americans wanting their rights,” Martin said. “Or any minority wanting their rights. Every person is a human being, and they deserve their rights.”
