The Daily Mail reports the soldier “The English Patient” is based on was gay, according to letters uncovered recently in Germany.

Count Laszlo de Almásy, a Hungarian-born adventurer, was apparently not the womanizer depicted in the book and film, the Mail states. Letters revealed to the Der Spiegel German magazine indicate the Nazi spy smuggler was in love with a Nazi soldier and may have had affairs with Egyptian princes.

The English Patient” was released in 1996.
