The leader of Maine’s largest social conservative lobbying group resigned Wednesday, according to FOX 23 — Portland FOX affiliate.

Michael Heath had been with Maine Family Policy Council for 15 years and helped the group push Issue One to the November Ballot Box, which proposes to reverse the same-sex marriage law passed earlier this year.

After accepting his resignation, the board said Heath has become a “lightning rod.”

Last year, Heath blamed the United States’ financial crisis on gay unions, claiming on his blog that if the Federal government were to pass a gay marriage ban, as well as eliminate domestic partnerships and civil unions, God would “crack a smile.”

The social conservative group has also been marginalized since the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) took charge to build support for Maine’s Issue One.
