Government official Kingsley Namakhwa has stated that not only is homosexuality illegal in his country but that anyone promoting it would be prosecuted.
After two men, who are believed to be the first gay couple to be interested in marriage in Malawi, were recently prosecuted on charges of public indecency, gay rights activists have been criticizing the Malawi government by putting up posters in support of the cause.
Namakhwa believes that the Malawi government finds these men to be the only gays in the country, but says,”If there are others, let them come out in the open.”
The government is now increasing its search for gay rights activists who are responsible for placing supportive signs throughout the city where even being known to be in support of such a cause is reason for prosecution.
