A Mississippi lesbian high school student is being denied the chance to go to prom after told she would be asked to leave the event if other students felt “uncomfortable” seeing her wearing a tuxedo while accompanied by her girlfriend.

The American Civil Liberties Union and Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition are working to see that the student be allowed to attend prom.

“Prom is supposed to be about all students being able to express themselves, have fun, and make memories that will last the rest of their lives,” Kristy Bennett, Legal Director of the ACLU of Mississippi said in an ACLU statement. “Constance has a constitutional right to take the person she’s dating to the prom, just like any other student at any other public school.”
