In a unanimous ruling Thursday, New York’s highest court defended the state’s policy of acknowledging same-sex unions formed in other states.
A majority of the judges on the court stated that their decision was extremely narrow and specific, leaving the legislature to settle the broader debate regarding the recognition of gay marriages.
The concurring opinion reveals that some judges believed that the court should have addressed the issue on a larger scale.
The ruling easily allows for future challenges of the state’s controversial policy.
