Lawmaker David Razu is proposing a bill to change Mexico City’s laws to include marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples.
City council will review the bill on Tuesday, and Razu said he is hopeful for legislative action on the bill by the end of this year.
“We only want everyone treated equally under the law; there is no intention to violate anyone’s rights, this simply acknowledges the rights of one social sector with no detriment to another,” he told Agence France-Presse.
Mexico City’s government is run by the liberal Democratic Revolutionary Party.
