Since March 3, gay couples began applying for marriage licenses, and three of the first weddings took place inside the Human Rights Campaign, according to gaytoday.com
The council in D.C. legalized the same-sex marriage in an 11-2 vote on Dec. 15. It was then signed by Mayor Adrian Fenty on Dec. 18. It then moved to the Congress for review and did not encounter any resistance.
Anti-gay activists tried to get the U.S. supreme court to issue against it, right before the law took place. Chief Justice John Roberts rejected the petition. Roberts stated:
“Congress could have stopped the law’s coming into force but congress has chosen not to act.”
Same-sex marriage is also legal in Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire Vermont; in Belgium, Canada, The Netherlands, Norway South Africa, Spain and Sweden.
