The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi filed a law suit against Itawamba Agricultural High School after their ban against a lesbian student’s request to bring her girlfriend to prom, according to Clarionledger.com
After the school board met and made this choice, Constance McMillen’s decision to challenge followed through quickly. A statement from the school board was made trying to defend their decision to ban same-sex prom dates.
The controversy over the ban caused “distractions to the educational process,” said the school board as reported on Clarionledger.com. The cancelling of the prom was in response of the board considering the “education, safety and well being of our students.”
McMillen plans on fighting this ban all the way.
“All I want is the same chance to enjoy my prom night like any other student. But my school would rather hurt all the students than treat everyone fairly.” McMillen said. “This isn’t just about me and my rights anymore —now I’m fighting for the opportunity of all the students at my school to have our prom.”
