Author David Sedaris is back with Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary (Little, Brown and Company; $21.99), a hilarious compilation of animal tales. Though Sedaris looks at human relations and experiences from a different perspective, his well known combination of humor and heart is still recognizable in each story.
Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk includes illustrations by Ian Falconer, author and illustrator of the bestselling Olivia series of children’s books. With the combination of Sedaris’ witty wordplay and Falconer’s creative illustrations, the plots come alive and readers can easily relate to the anthropomorphized characters.
Released Sept. 28, the book includes stories such as “The Motherless Bear” and “The Parenting Storks,” where Sedaris tackles issues like death and lies parents tell their children. In “The Squirrel and the Chipmunk,” two lovers from opposite worlds come face-to-face with their differences when they run out of things to talk about after two weeks of dating. The reality of the stories can teach Sedaris’ readers a lesson while still making them laugh from beginning to end.
Sedaris’ latest work looks at common human relations, issues and mannerisms from the perspective of animals. The writer emphasizes and even trivializes some of the different behaviors of human beings, adding a hilarious spin to every story.
