Administrators at Syracuse University yesterday unveiled plans to offset gay health care, Inside Higher Ed reports.

Gay employees whose spouses are extended health care will receive the $1,000 benefit known as “grossing up,” or providing extra payment to equate to an original value without deductions, the report states.

Married couples who receive health care from the university don’t have to pay taxes, whereas gay partnerships resembling marriage do, the article continues. This is because New York lacks gay marriage laws extending those same benefits to same-sex couples.
