District of Columbia’s mayor issued an appreciative certificate to an ex-gay leader yesterday, but took it back today, according to Towleroad.com.

The Director of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays, Regina Giggs, originally received the certificate after working with the organization without pay, preferring instead to channel donations to local youth groups, the article stated.

Mayor Adrian Fenty apologized today because of his office’s apparent support for ex-gay causes, which he said was not the case.

A Fenty spokeswoman said, “We apologize for the error as it runs contrary to the mayor’s vision of a more open and inclusive city,” blaming the certificate’s issuance on a staffing error.
