You're About to Be Hit With a Full-Blonde Bieber

Sue joins the Glee club as Sam expresses his inner Bieber.

While teaching his Spanish class, Schuester decides it’s time for a comeback. A moment later, he and Emma find Sue Sylvester overdosed on gummy bear vitamins, too morose about her kaput cheerleading squad to go on. Emma proposes that Sue joins Glee club to lift her spirits, falling perfectly into Sue’s trap.

Theme. Schuester announces the theme of this year’s Regionals is “Anthems,” but the episode centers on the idea of a comeback. Rachel desperately wants to come back from…um…she’s not really sure. She just wants a big moment. Sue wants to spring back from her failed cheerleader-cannon act. Sam notices the physical chemistry between his girlfriend Quinn and Finn (why must their names rhyme?) and decides to do something about it.

What I Loved.

  • Sam’s rendition of “Baby” by Justin Bieber. It was cute and mellow, and even prompted Puck, Artie and Mike to join his “one-man band” named The Bieber Experience. The now-quartet sings the Bieb’s “Somebody to Love,” causing the Glee girls to scream and swoon. As always, Glee finds the perfect balance of charm and irony.
  • Brittany’s fashion sense. In her scheme to make a comeback, Rachel pays Brittany to model her schoolgirl clothes and start a trend. Then, once everyone is wearing plaid skirts and headbands, Brittany must announce that Rachel was her inspiration. This plan, of course, falls to pieces. Brittany’s mistake of wearing legwarmers on her arms catches on, and the entire school is seen sporting them as arm warmers. Eventually, Brittany wears a carousel horse sweater, white scarf, plaid skirt and tights and, alas, the girl population copies the look immediately. Brittany is offered interviews from Teen Vogue and a “Trendsetter of the Year” award from a website, and no credit goes Rachel’s way.
  • Rachel and Mercede’s Diva-Off. The talented ladies belt out “Take Me or Leave Me” from the Broadway musical Rent. As an avid Rent fan, I was thrilled to hear the girls cover this confident anthem–and, once again, Rachel (Lea Michelle) performs a song originally sung by her look-a-like and biological mother on the show, Idina Menzel.

What I Didn’t Love.

  • I know I’ve griped about this before, but the issue isn’t going away, so neither will my annoyance. Quinn still pisses me off: Even as she breaks things off with Finn to focus on her boyfriend Sam, she does so with a seductive whisper in Finn’s ear: “He’s an artist, and that…” (leans in) “…turns me on.” Give me a break. Then, after seeing his Bieber performance, Santana decides Sam is hot and she wants a piece. She first tells him that, yes, Quinn cheated on him, and that she would like to be his “mistress.” She offers her body to him like it’s a piece of candy. Clearly, she’s okay with coming across as a prostitute. Are these girls seriously so insecure that they must either a.) cheat on their nice boyfriend or b.) strive to be some guy’s side dish?
  • Sam drops Quinn on her butt (I’m okay with that) and decides to date Santana instead. He goes from one bad choice to another. So much for that promise ring!

Top Character Quotes.

  • “You have more grease in your hair than the guy behind Wiki Leaks.” – Sue
  • “I thought it was summer–no one ever taught me how to read a calendar.” – Brittany
  • “I agree with Spongehair Squarechin.” – Sue
  • ” There’s only one I in ‘diva’ and that I is me.” – Mercedes
  • “I wants on them froggy lips.” – Santana

Next Week. The Glee kids get–gasp!–drunk and go a little wild. Rachel kisses Blaine and, from Kurt’s reaction, things look a little steamier than you’d expect.
