Charges of a DUI sparked one California senator to reveal his sexuality.

Authorities sentenced Sen. Ray Ashburn to two days in jail and three years of probation after he was caught driving with a blood alcohol level of .15. In addition, Ashburn will pay $2,000 in fines and have a suspended license for 30 days.

While entering his plea Wednesday, he acknowledged his reason for drinking that night. He had been at a gay-friendly night club. This statement lead Ashburn to, at 55, admit he is gay.

Even after paying his debt to society for drinking and driving, Ashburn will not run for re-election.
