The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles elected a lesbian priest; some feel that her role in the church is divisive, according to an article from the Associated Press.
The 55-year-old Reverend Mary Glasspool has been with her partner since 1988 and believes that her election was “liberating for the denomination.”
“I’ve committed my life as a life of service to the people of Jesus Christ, and what hurts is the sense that anybody might have that my name or my servant-hood could be perceived as divisive,” Glasspool said.
Glasspool is the second openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church as well as the world Anglican fellowship.
