MIAMI—A finalized adoption makes a lesbian mother one of three only gay adoptive parents in the state.
Despite admitting her sexuality on a state adoption form, Vanessa Alenier’s adoption of a relative was legalized today by Miami-Dade Court Circuit Judge Maria Sampedro-Iglesia.
In a copy of her orders, Sampedro-Iglesia’s said “there is no rational connection between sexual orientation and what is or is not in the best interest of a child.”
Florida has maintained a ban on gay adoption since 1977. However, current appeals are challenging the constitutionality of this ban.
