A Nevada parents group is hopeful to stop production of two high school plays, both involving gay-related themes and characters.
“The Laramie Project” and “Rent” are planned for production at Green Valley High in Henderson, Nev., but the Concerned Parents group filed a lawsuit against the school as a violation of the school’s policy against “R-rated” material, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Parents also say students should not portray gay characters.
“The Laramie Project” is scheduled for production from Nov. 12 through Nov. 14, and “Rent” is planned for early next year. Green Valley High’s principal Jeff Horn said the school wanted to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the “Laramie Project’s” premiere. The school was originally competing for a chance to stage a new, unnamed Disney production but fell through. “Rent: School Edition” seemed appropriate since it is edited, deleting vulgar language and a sexually explicit song.
Horn told Advocate.com he has no control in the court system if a judge decides to cancel the play or both plays.
“But personally I have no plans to cancel them,” he said.
Kent State is scheduled for a production of “Rent” starting this Friday.
