Although numbers of new HIV cases has dropped from prior years in France, a new study published today revealed the proportion of HIV cases between gay men and straight men in 2008 has remained the same compared to prior years.
In a developed nation like France, where condoms and education of sexually transmitted diseases are plentiful, it is shocking to think that 2008 introduced 6,940 new HIV cases–almost half of which belong to gay man. According to the study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, the proportion of new HIV cases between gay and straight men is about the same as it was in 2003.
In 2003, France recorded a number of 8,930 new cases of HIV.
With how much progress gays and lesbians have earned in mainstream culture between 2003 and 2008, it is a bit disturbing to see little progress in France on the battlefield between gay men and HIV.
