MONTE CARLO, Monaco—Recent studies show Gardasil could prove beneficial to gay men, too.

While Gardasil is presently used to prevent certain forms of human papillomavirus, Merck, the company that produces it, released a study showing its 78% effectiveness against anal intraepithelial neoplasia, a precursor to anal cancer.

“We are excited to learn more about the potential of Gardasil to help prevent HPV and HPV-related cancers and diseases in both men and women,” executive director of Merck Research Laboratories Richard Haupt said.

Merck submitted its findings to the Food and Drug Administration in January.
