Kent State University made history this past Sunday by organizing it’s first ever social event for the LGBT community.
Students, faculty and staff crowded the music listening center inside the Student Center Sunday for a two-hour meet-and-greet event.
The goal was nothing more than meeting people, eating cupcakes and promoting an image that Kent State is a great place for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and trangendered individuals.
Nevertheless, it’s been a long time coming for this milestone and too long, said several many staff and faculty members.
Alfreda Brown, vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion, told guests right before her prepared remarks that the university should have began hosting an event like this years ago.
I was shocked by the turnout of the event. 43 guests RSVPed on Facebook, but more than double of that turned out throughout the event.
Randi Schneider, Associate Director of the Student Success Program, which hosted the event along with the LGBTQ Center, said she expects the LGBTQ Reception to reoccur next year and every following year afterward.
