A fusion of riot grrrl, lo-fi electronic, and rock style, New York based Le Tigre is a band is known for touching on socio-political issues of feminism and LGBT rights. Over ten years later, members of the band JD Samson and Johanna Fateman are starting up a new, slightly more electronic-based, but still true to the riot grrrl style, art/music collective group, MEN.
The four-man band formed in 2007 and four years later has released their first full-length album, Talk About Body. The disco-house, electro album features sounds similar to Samson and Fateman’s own Le Tigre, The B52s, and New Young Pony Club. With quirky and controversial lyrics over top of body moving beats, through and through the band makes for an upbeat and entertaining addition to your music library.
Samson is known throughout the LGBT community as an outspoken gay rights activist and has recorded tracks targeted at gay and transgender issues. MEN’s lyrics reflect the messages Samson and the other band members stand for, making powerful points about trans-awareness, gender roles, acceptance, and society.
Blunt, profanity-filled, and thought provoking lyrics paired with steady electronic beats are consistent from track to track in MEN’s debut release. An infectious fusion of punk, disco, and electronic sounds sets the band’s style apart from other basic electronic releases this year and is sure to bring only positive attention to MEN, who are set to go on tour later this year.
