A gay Saudi diplomat is seeking safety in the U.S after receiving threats from his country’s government, which executes people convicted of homosexual acts.

Ali Ahmed Asseri was removed from his job as first secretary of the Saudi consulate in Los Angeles, according to a story by the UK’s Daily Mail. He claims his officials revoked his diplomatic passport after they discovered he was gay.

Asseri is in hiding until he hears from the Department of Homeland Security’s decision on his request for asylum.
