Senate Repeals Don't Ask Don't Tell

The Senate today repealed the 17-year ban on gays serving openly in the military known as the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

The Senate today repealed the 17-year ban on gays serving openly in the military known as the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The repeal comes after a failed first attempt to have the ban amended to a military expenditures bill earlier this month.

In a 65-31 vote, the Senate passed the bill, which was supported by six Republicans. Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) called this a grave error, stating it could effect the military’s battle readiness, according to The New York Times.

With DADT’s repeal, openly gay and lesbian persons may join and come out in the military with impunity.
