In 2022, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) launched the “Press 3” option. This phone extension, offered by the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, led callers directly to LGBTQ+ youth-focused services. During its run, the “Press 3” extension received 1.3 million contacts, including chats, calls and texts. However, as of July 17, 2025, funding for LGBTQ+ crisis services has been eliminated, per the Trump administration’s orders. As these mandates unravelled, panic escalated as queer communities feared the implications this would have on LGBTQ+ safety altogether.
These measures can be seen as a conscious threat to the well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals, most notably for trans and non-binary youth. The Trevor Project recorded in 2024 that nearly 40 percent of LGBTQ+ youth had firmly considered suicide, a significant portion of respondents being gender non-conforming. Specialized services for LGBTQ youth are exceptionally vital as sociopolitical condemnations against queer and trans people continue to rise.
There is still hope for suicide prevention. As of now, the 988 lifeline still offers an empathetic experience led by crisis counselors, only there is no option for LGBTQ+ specific service if needed.
The Trevor Project continues to provide a 24/7 suicide and crisis lifeline designated for individuals struggling with LGBTQ+ issues. Additionally, Trans Lifeline offers a hotline during business hours Monday through Friday 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. EST.
These hotlines promise confidential, empathetic care for queer individuals. For queer and trans youth, anonymity can be life saving, as many do not feel safe confiding in friends or family about gender or sexuality.
Suicidality is a spectrum that should be taken seriously at any severity. It is a paralyzing state of mind that worsens with isolation. However, it is treatable. Though it may feel hard to find, empathy and grace are always there for anyone struggling. Despite ongoing social and political efforts to dehumanize queer and trans people, community continues to be the strongest resource.
