After starting a petition to bring her sophomore girlfriend to prom, 18-year-old Constance McMillen accuses her school of cancelling prom in retribution to make other students angry at her, as reported by The Clarion Ledger.

Officials at McMillen’s school told her last month that she was not allowed to bring her girlfriend to prom and could not wear a tuxedo. After her request, the school circulated a letter banning same-sex dates. After this, she was very shocked about the entire situation.

“That’s really messed up because the message they are sending is that if they have to let gay people go to prom that they are not going to have one,” said McMillen. A bunch of kids at school are really going to hate me for this, so in a way it’s really retaliation.”

The ACLU’s senior attorney for its gay rights project, Christine Sun, claims the ban is a violation of McMillen’s constitutional rights.
