Census will record gay, transgender Americans

Census representatives told gay rights activists that the number of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals in future editions of the bureau's annual American Community Survey.

SAN FRANSICO — The U.S. Census Bureau may soon ask you for your sexual orientation and gender identity.

Census representatives told gay right activists that the number of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals will be recorded in future editions of the bureau’s annual American Community Survey.

The Bureau hopes this type of addition to the census will give state and local governments snapshots of how their populations are changing.

They say it’s too late to include such tallies in their 2010 reports.
