Maine supporters of 'No on 1' lead with campaign money

Maine's Question 1 supporters for marriage equality raise more money.

Voters in Maine will decide the outcome of Question 1 in less than a week. The proposed law would allow marriage equality in Maine, and according to The Associated Press, supporters of Question 1 have raised more money compared to those campaigning against it.

State officials reported the campaign amounts Friday. “No on 1/Protect Maine Equality said in its campaign finance report to the state that it has raised $4 million in its campaign to keep Maine’s same-sex marriage law on the books,” the AP said. “That compares to the $2.5 million raised by Stand for Marriage Maine, which forced the people’s veto vote through a petition drive.”

The campaign for marriage equality has reportedly received several $50 to $1,000 donations in comparison to opponents only receiving $1.1 million from the National Organization for Marriage and $152,600 from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.
